This is a spoof of the famous Abbott & Costello routine "Who's On First" (possibly the most famous comedy sketch of all time), which they began performing in the 1930's.  But the birth of this type of wordplay misunderstanding sketch actually dates back to vaudeville theatre in the late 1800s.  Even Abbott and Costello's famous sketch wasn't the original version! :)
